Anyone that is out and about in the Flower Mound area knows that the North Texas sun can take a beating on your hair. Mix in air pollutants and other residue, it is no wonder a hot shower before bed is often one of the most rewarding times of the day. Since it is so important to replenish the vitality and nourishment in our hair, you may be curious if your shampoo and conditioning treatment is working the best for you. In fact, we know this is an important topic as one of the most common questions asked by our clients is:
“Should I use a deep conditioner or a daily conditioner?”
In short, the answer isn’t about one or the other. It’s about understanding the differences and knowing how the right combination leads to the best possible look and feel for your hair. Some of the main differences between deep conditioning treatment and daily conditioning are the ingredients in either product, the amount of time each treatment takes, and the effectiveness each provides.
Ingredients in Deep Conditioners
Deep conditioners consist of ingredients that can penetrate the shaft of the hair and nourish your cuticle on a deeper level. Quality products will include ingredients such as Aloe Vera Juice, Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, or Avocado Oil. Regular conditioner contains ingredients that can absorb the materials on the surface of your hair, but won’t go any further than that. In either situation, we always recommend looking for products that contain natural, healthy ingredients over harmful chemicals that can “dry out” or even damage your scalp.
How Often Should you Deep Condition Your Hair?
Deep conditioning treatment is often done once a week and requires more time than a regular conditioner. In fact, most deep conditioners require approx. 10 to 30 minutes to reach their maximum effectiveness. Deep conditioners take longer, as they go deeper into the hair shaft to replenish to the deep roots of your hair. Regular conditioning is great to keep your scalp feeling fresh and clean a few times a week. However, it should only be done on an “as needed” basis. For an analogy, regular conditioning is like picking up a few things around the house. Deep conditioning treatment is like grabbing a mop, some Lysol and scrubbing the dirt from each nook and cranny.
As you might expect, the benefits of a deep conditioning last much longer than regular product as well. So, while it may be a longer treatment, deep conditioning will leave your hair feeling rejuvenated over a much longer period. In conclusion, a regularly scheduled deep conditioning treatment can improve the look, feel and health of your hair. This is because regular conditioning only reaches the surface of your hair, leaving gunk and other build up below the surface of your scalp. Both treatments, when done correctly and with quality products, work wonderfully together to keep you looking your best!
